<itunes:summary>Today I realised that, though this song has been online for quite a while, it has never received a dedicated post with lyrics and podcast to boot. Well, here it is.

Death in Custody is a song about prison suicide; a tragic subject but something I feel quite passionately about. It was written in an indignant rage, which probably comes across in the lyrics, though I think I hit the right balance between bite and compassion. Let me know if you agree.

Lyrics:
Mrs Perkins, Mrs Perkins
We’re here to hold your hand
We drove your husband to his death
We hope you understand
We treated him like poultry
We knew he was a man
Don’t be sad Mrs Perkins

Mrs Perkins, Mrs Perkins
You’re shaking like a leaf
But seeing where your husband died will help you with the grief We’ve already been in there
and cleaned it out with bleach
Please don’t hate me Mrs Perkins

Mrs Perkins, Mrs Perkins
I wish that I could voice
the sorrow I am feeling for yourself and for your boys but my pity has it’s limits
your husband made a choice
no, it’s not my fault Mrs Perkins

Mrs Perkins, Mrs Perkins
I need to set things right
this morning I made jokes about your husbands suicide I said it was a waste of taxes
keeping him alive
oh please don’t cry Mrs Perkins

Mrs Perkins, Mrs Perkins
it hurts to look at you
your crying is a thing I have forgotten how to do
and I hate to move you on but my shift ends at quarter to go home to your children Mrs Perkins

A common post-gig question is, "So, who's Rianne then?" A common post-gig answer to said question is, "Rianne is an abstract drawn from various sources; a quantum probability whom I can only hope to meet one day. Perhaps she's you." A common reaction to this answer is an awkward silence, followed by a hasty retreat.

This is yet another take from my Summer 2011 recording session. Unusually for me, it is quite long, weighing in at about 4 and a half minutes. Next stop prog!

You think I'm joking....

Lyrics:

Oh Rianne
The fact of never having you
took quite a lot of working through
I've previously sung about the worst time we ever said adieu
This story should be done by now
The pages should have fallen out

Oh Rianne
I really really think I am the only one for you
and I would waste a whole life vainly trying to convince you that it's true
I could be your knight in shining armour or your whore

Oh Rianne I will not rest until I'm yours

Oh Rianne
Fate forever forked
This one time in your life just give it up and go for me
My self esteem gets damaged and my heart aches when you see me as plan B
Bring me my rivals and I will defeat them all

Oh Rianne I will not rest until I'm yours

Oh Rianne
I will not abort
Though when I say I will not rest I mean I'll strive to be the best
and either win your heart or self improve enough that I can just restart
Fate cracks a window once it's bolted all one's doors

Oh Rianne I will not rest until I'm yours

In the aftermath of insanity, one cold fact endures

Oh Rianne I will not rest until I'm yours

<itunes:summary>Hello once again, friends. Thanks for the positive comments regarding recent tracks :) I thought I'd start posting little snippets and obscurities inbetween the main download posts. I promise not to shout about these ones quite so much.

Today's delicia is a sneak peak at my current recording project: a concept album! I have the songs written (there will be some old, and some new), and it will tell a story of sorts. I'm really quite excited about it; I'll be recording the drum tracks with Tony from The Lost Clauses over the next few weeks, and from then I will start layering things up. I am determined that it sound epic, and to this end I have started composing brass parts.

It's been a new and interesting experience, but those are the experiences that really enhance one's understanding of the craft. All about pushing in new directions. Anyway, today's download is a sample from one such arrangement, rendered in nasty synthesised brass. Don't suppose you know any brass musicians?</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>"I finally grew up
realised love is a fairy tale
my stomach turned, my face went pale
and then I threw up"

This is a very cynical song. I can't say it really reflects my personality as a whole, that would make me quite an upleasant character, but it does reflect a little part of my (and, I think, everybody's) mind, blown up to horrifying extremes. Lyrically, I always seem to bounce between hope and cynicism. One of these days I will get the balance right. Then I will truly be the poetic voice of a generation, and everything will be ok.

Or maybe everything will always be FUCKED.

Then again...

Lyrics

Show me some warmth
I'm sick of being bored
I wanted love but all I ever seemed to get was ignored

so now I've changed
I've allowed my heart to wilt
I've learned to disregard my feelings and to lie without guilt

I can say you're beautiful

I'm not looking for a show stopper
I'm not asking you to treat me proper
I stumbled from my pedestal, I'm crumpled on the floor
now I'm pretty sure that I can't hope for more
a girl like you to make me her whore
so show me some warmth

I finally grew up
realised love is a fairy tale
my stomach turned, my face went pale
and then I threw up

but now I'm cured
there is no pressure, you can't hurt me
when you callously desert me
so long as I've scored

I've dealt with your type before

I'm not looking for a show stopper
I'm not asking you to treat me proper
I'm cold and I am naked sat here quaking at your door
I'll tell you once more, like I told you before
come over here and show me some warmth
just show me some warmth</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>"All the common people cheer

Here, by popular demand, is my 2007 recording of 'Robin Hood', that featured on my split with Al Baker. This is still one of my most popular songs, and I love playing it, though that galloping rhythm requires a LOT of energy!

I have been told that this song has become more prescient since I wrote it, but I honestly believe that the story of Robin Hood will always resonate as long as people yearn for some kind of social justice. This is kinda the point of the song; that while he may not have been a real person, the legend of Robin Hood is immortal. And really fucking cool.

Lyrics:

You’ll be lazing in your manor when he’ll burst in through the door

he’ll take all of your money and he’ll give it to the poor

take your fancy clothes but leave you rags to keep you warm

He’s the sign of a coming storm

CHORUS

All the common people cheer

This is the dawn of saner years

All the greedy will know fear

Now Robin Hood is here

Now I have heard a lot of nonsense spoken about him

I even heard it said he pledged allegiance to the king

but in my heart I know that Robin Hood did no such thing

Robin Hood did no such thing

Now the powerful and wealthy will lecture you with glee

remind you Robin Hood is just a work of fantasy

but legend will outlive their fortunes and their tyranny

Hooray for Robin Hood

<itunes:summary>Aaaaaaaaand I'm back! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

This weeks song has been in the repetoire for a few years now, and is a rare example of a song that wrote itself.

In fact, I don't think I could have avoided writing it; it forced itself from me like some kind of metaphorical lightning baby. Though ostensibly a sad song (there were tears at time of writing), it is truly life affirming to care about something (and someone) to such an extent, and in my numbest, most reclusive and robotic moments, playing it reminds me that I am a squishy humanoid after all.

Eek is one of my proudest moments, lyrically, and I would love to record it with a full band one day!

Lyrics:

I knew a girl, she knew me
socially, not biblically
but we were very close
she said she liked me most
and the talk was so free
interrupting the TV
the talk was so free

I remember laughter in a near deserted bar
and thinking, 'How can you not know how wonderful you are?'
and feeling like a planet orbiting a star
before gravity smothers its heart

She came to see me before her flight
we drank a lot of vodka and we talked all night
avoiding the mines
deployed between the lines
as we discussed, how the world is so unjust
just so unjust

Her ticket was booked, I knew when she'd depart
but somehow when she said goodbye it almost broke my heart
I had not prepared
I guess I was just scared
Oh so frightened to face
such an ugly waste
a hideous waste

Are we just good friends or did we lead each other on
We have so much in common but the timing was all wrong
The moments we each cried
did not coincide
Yeah, she'd wept for me once
she beat me by a month
but once was enough</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Pre-emptive seasons greetings one and all!

With Christmas looming on the horizon like a moon sized pudding, I thought I'd upload the first cut of my 2007 Christmas single for your listening pleasure.

Me and my friend Mike recorded this in our house in my third year of uni, and gave it away to our friends as an alternative christmas card. I still receive messages from friends who have just listened to it around this time of year, so why not introduce it to a whole new audience? It really is the gift that keeps on giving. TO ME.

I hope your last few days of work aren't too arduous and will see you again in a couple of days with more Christmassy music!

Yours,

Trembling Jack Luster AKA Andrzej Stepien

Lyrics:

It's that time of year again when we
meet distant family
pretend to know each other

Line of aunties kiss my cheek and then
say I've grown again
say I'm slim and handsome

It's Christmas Time
I hope yours was better than mine

Angel sitting on the Christmas tree
gazing down at me
gazing down with pity
as sitting round like animals we feed
give presents no-one needs
what a waste of plastic

It's Christmas Time
I hope yours was better than mine

Hollow isolation in my gut
all the shops are shut
I am feeling lonely
Now I'm hanging like the crucifix
dying for your lips
dying for you slowly

It's Christmas Time
I hope yours was better than mine

There goes another year
I hope you are happy

It's Christmas Time
I hope yours was better than mine</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Another fortnight, another demo: this time, a revolution song. It's not even ironic or anything.

'Hippies With Fists' has been in my repertoire for a very long time now, but until this summer I had never gotten round to recording a demo. To be honest, for a long time I left it out of my set as it was very difficult to maintain the youthful optimism that had spawned it. These days, however, t would seem that revolution is in fashion (in contrast to the 'eternal' boom that was the backdrop to this songs inception), and it seems to go down well live. There does seem to be an absence of honest to goodness rabble rousing in music these days. I guess that, to paraphrase Stewart Lee, the last taboo is for an artist to do something earnestly and well. In this instance, I at least do it earnestly.

Lyrics:

There's power in a factory or warehouse
There's power in a restaurant or bar
There's power in a shop or call centre
You can't keep us down where we are
We'll rise from our desks and our station
from the logins and clock-in machines
We'll stand with our backs all unbroken
We'll show you what unity means
We'll rise from the cafes and bookshops
lay down our price guns and opening blades
We'll ride from the stations and bus stops
the new international brigade

Yeah you tell us we're all idealistic
and there's just not enough to go round
Well don't be surprised when the farmhands arrive
to cultivate the old stately grounds

Potatoes will grow on your croquet lawns
Children will swim in your pool
We'll tear down these walls to build houses
The ballrooms will open to all
We'll drink to the end of your era
We'll drink to the rise of our star
then throw up the drinks in your white marble sinks
and retell the story so far

We'll fuck on your strategy tables
Make love where you used to make war
then with relieved sighs
wipe the tears from our eyes
and thank fuck you're not in charge anymore

Yeah you tell us we're all idealistic
and there's just not enough to go round
Well don't be surprised when the farmhands arrive
to cultivate the old stately grounds</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Hello everyone! Time for the second in the series of demos I recorded this summer. This is a very old song; having been written during my second year at university.

I wrote these lyrics with the intention of consoling the broken hearted, and am always happy when people approach me after shows to tell me that it made them feel better about their own romantic situation. I guess on this count it is a resounding success. The irony is that when I wrote it, I was giving the advice that I so badly needed to hear myself. If only someone else had written it...

Lyrics:

So kid, you had your heart
broke for the first time yesterday
While it seemed to sweet at the start
it was always going to end this way
Now you're watching TV
reclaiming your virginity

You've lost a lover
I swear there will be others
though it seems a waste of rubber right now
Note to younger self:
in two months you'll cry over someone else
like I did
Welcome to big school kid

Do you remember when
your bed was your throne?
Now you can't get rid of her scent
and you can't sleep alone
You lie awake yearning
tossing and turning

You've lost a lover
I swear there will be others
though it seems a waste of rubber right now
Drink numbs the pain
but you will need your friends to keep you sane
like I did
Welcome to big school kid

There are more rational things to do
than hate someone for not loving you

It never gets easier
and you'll pray for amnesia
with no-one to please you you turn cold
Just look at me
I have felt the same since 23
Love hurts no matter how old you get
Welcome to big school kid</itunes:summary>

'Wealthy Man' was written during my days of shitty office jobs and unemployment, hence the minory mood that seems to characterise this period. I was very pleased when I came up with the chords to this song, and I think it may be the first progression I had ever written that sounded properly 'clever'. This kind of fast waltz is probably my favourite rhythm to play, and I love a rapid-fire, wordy vocal, so 'Wealthy Man' has gone on to become a comfortable live standard.

The lyrics are not particularly vague, so I'll let them speak for themselves other than to point out that I wrote this 'in character' as someone who abandons their humanity (quite necessarily) in pursuit of what our society deems as success.

Lyrics

I've suffered tedium turned up to medium
read about a thing called life without actually leading one
Poverty brings
a life spent saving up for things
never one day as a king

By nature I am
a very small fish in a very large frying pan
To rise from beneath
I have grown teeth
My morality was weighing me down

In this Western world
first you get the money
then you get more money

I wish to serve you a dish
of vengeance brought to boiling point on an aga bought and fueled by my avarice
now that you ask me, what is my wish?
when I'm rich
when I'm rich
when I'm rich
when I'm rich

The world will bow
to the wealthy man

I've been taught since the earliest age
There's no such thing as a free lunch unless that is you put your money in the stock exchange
Critical thinking
is a dangerous thing
with dinosaurs roaming the pains

A parasite's what I've become
I don't mind tearing my pound of flesh from anyone
The game was so stacked
I had to react
now money is all I can love

In this Western world
all that counts is power
money buys you power

...

And any woman who dares turn me down?
You can bet your bottom dollar she will never work again in this or any town
and fuck all my friends
I don't need them
when money's the best friend I've found

In this Western world
love is where you find it
money lets you buy it

...

I'll buy your love
as a wealthy man</itunes:summary>
